10th Annual Meeting of the IHMF®

Report on the 10th Annual Meeting of the IHMF®, Paris, 28 February 2 March 2003

The meeting comprised background lectures, keynote presentations, poster sessions and interactive case histories.

The opening lecture was a timely review of bioterrorism. The discussion included all implications of bioterrorism, from the likely agents, effects, symptoms, and possible use of herpesviruses, to treatment, vaccination programmes, testing and notification processes.

Two guideline review sessions were held on Interrupting the Transmission of HSV and Herpesvirus Infections of the CNS, and were chaired by A Strand and S Sacks, and J Gnann and K Tyler, respectively. Both sessions contained background lectures, based on the draft monograph, to provide delegates with sufficient information to debate recommendations. Each presentation was followed by a 5-minute discussion. Having heard all presentations and discussions, delegates voted on recommendations for further discussion. These were prioritized according to the number of votes received and discussed until time ran out, or the chairs felt the discussion had reached fruition.

The topics and presenters of keynote presentations were:
  • Preventing Transmission of Genital Herpes with Antivirals; L Corey
  • Global Genital Herpes Survey; D Patrick
  • Neonatal Herpes; D Kimberlin
  • HSV and Schizophrenia; R Yolken
  • HSV for Tumour Lysis; J Markert

Abstracts of the presentations and posters appear in issue 10:1 of Herpes.

The motion for the plenary debate was:
This house believes all persons at high risk for STDs should be screened for HSV.

Following presentations for and against the motion, by H Handsfield (USA) and A Mindel (Australia), respectively, a lively debate was chaired by J-E Malkin.

Social activities included an opening reception, gala dinner and optional city tours.

We thank GlaxoSmithKline for sponsoring the Annual Meeting, and Novartis, Eli Lilly and Focus Technologies for their support.
